Zone Zero Guidelines
We are sharing the Zone Zero Guidelines (they can also be found here https://www.sandiego.gov/sites/default/files/2026-04/zone-0-guidelines-for-existing-structures.pdf) because these requirements are likely to become increasingly important for homeowners in our community, particularly those living in designated Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (which includes almost all of Kensington).
Zone Zero generally refers to the first five feet surrounding a structure and is intended to reduce the chance that embers or nearby combustible materials can ignite a home during a wildfire.
The guidelines are the most current applicable to San Diego residents. It is important to note that these guidelines may not necessarily be viewed as the final word on Zone Zero. The California Board Forestry is still completing the regulatory review process, and the City of San Diego continues to develop and implement its local requirements. As a result, some of the details contained in this document could still be clarified or modified.
For now, we encourage everyone to review the guidelines and become familiar with what is currently being proposed or required, while recognizing that we should expect additional clarification as the state and City complete this process.
Whether this document is revised again or is the final word, we felt this document contains many excellent concepts that may guide all of us as we work to harden and further protect our homes, and our community against the perils of wildfire.
We will continue to follow these developments and share any significant changes with our community.

Mid-City Plan Update
In this downloadable PDF you will find correspondence from the leaders of the Kensington Talmadge Planning Group (KTPG) regarding the Mid-City Community Plan as well as a recent article from the San Diego Union Tribune and the current draft of the Mid City Communities Plan Update.
This is very important to Kensington and other Mid City communities (City Heights, Normal Heights, Talmadge and Rolando) as it determines development density and other factors for the next 30 years. The current proposal could boost the number of homes from 54,000 to 96,000, and the population from 138,000 to 227,000.
There is an important meeting coming up on September 21 st (KTPG meeting at the Kensington Community Church at 6:30 PM) where City planners will present the draft of this plan. We need to provide feedback and our concerns before a draft plan is finalized. The deadline for public comment is October 2nd and can be submitted at through the link below or by writing to PlanMidCity@SanDiego.gov
